A revised method and a record of assistance
In the first edition of this book, the chapter entitled “Different sages, different opinions” set out, from various scriptures, differing views about the origins of communities classified as anuloma and pratiloma, and about the origins of the Vaidya and Kayastha communities. In the present edition those chapters have been omitted. In their place, the history of Rajput rule in Bengal has been discussed through the inscriptions issued by Bengal’s later rulers, the Pala and Sena kings. With bowed head, I offer sincere thanks to the scholars who have laboured to decipher these inscriptions, and to those who, through the Varendra Anusandhan Samiti and the Bangiya Sahitya Parishad, have published them and made discussion easier.
It should also be mentioned here that the late Pannalal Singh of Jiaganj–Nehalia, a man of many virtues, placed me under an enduring debt of gratitude by directing me to the books relevant to my subject.
In my long years of work I found a colleague, like a brother, in the esteemed Sri Ashutosh Chowdhury of Bajargram, Burdwan. I regard him as an encouragement sent by God. It was he who first introduced me to our community and, by drawing its sympathy towards me, continued to encourage me. I shall always remember the heartfelt support of Burdwan’s well-known lawyer, the late Nibaran Chandra Hui; the late Haripada Datta of Belgram; and the late Jatabihari Hui of Rampur.
Finally, I gratefully acknowledge that, had my friend Sri Dwijendra Chandra Ray not undertaken the heavy responsibility of publication, it would not have been easy for me to publish this book. My fellow community members and I therefore remain in his lasting debt.

এই পুস্তকখানির প্রথম সংস্করণে “নানা মুনির নানা মত” শীর্ষক অধ্যায়ে বিবিধ শাস্ত্রগ্রন্থ হইতে যাবতীয় অনুলোম ও প্রতিলোম-জাত জাতির এবং বৈদ্য ও কায়স্থ জাতির উৎপত্তি সম্বন্ধে নানাবিধ মতানৈক্য প্রদর্শিত হইয়াছিল। বর্তমান সংস্করণে তৎসমুদয় অধ্যায় পরিত্যক্ত হইল, এবং তৎপরিবর্তে বঙ্গদেশের শেষ নরপতিবৃন্দ, পাল ও সেনরাজগণ কর্তৃক প্রদত্ত শাসন-লিপি সমূহ হইতে, বঙ্গদেশে রাজপুত সাম্রাজ্যের ইতিহাস আলোচিত হইল। যে সমুদায় পণ্ডিতমণ্ডলী বহু পরিশ্রমে উল্লিখিত শাসনলিপি সমূহের পাঠোদ্ধার করিয়াছেন এবং “বরেন্দ্র-অনুসন্ধান-সমিতি” ও “বঙ্গীয় সাহিত্য পরিষৎ” প্রভৃতি যাঁহারা তৎসমুদয় প্রকাশ করিয়া আলোচনার পথ সুগম করিয়া দিয়াছেন, তাঁহাদিগের প্রতি শ্রদ্ধাবনত মস্তকে আন্তরিক কৃতজ্ঞতা নিবেদন করিতেছি।
এস্থলে ইহাও উল্লেখযোগ্য যে জিয়াগঞ্জ—নেহালিয়া নিবাসী অশেষ গুণালঙ্কৃত স্বর্গীয় পান্নালাল সিংহ মহাশয় আমার আলোচ্য বিষয় সম্বন্ধীয় উল্লিখিত পুস্তক সমূহের সন্ধান দিয়া আমাকে চিরকৃতজ্ঞতাপাশে আবদ্ধ করিয়া গিয়াছেন।
আমার সুদীর্ঘকালব্যাপী সাধনায়, বর্দ্ধমান—বাজারগ্রাম-নিবাসী সোদর-প্রতিম শ্রীমান আশুতোষ চৌধুরীকে সহকর্মীরূপে লাভ করিয়া, তাঁহাকে ভগবৎ-প্রেরিত উৎসাহদাতা বলিয়াই মনে করি। তিনিই আমাকে প্রথমে স্বজাতি সমাজে পরিচিত করিয়া এবং আমার প্রতি তাঁহাদিগের সহানুভূতি আকর্ষণ করিয়া আমাকে উৎসাহিত করিয়া আসিতেছেন। বর্দ্ধমানের সুপ্রসিদ্ধ উকিল স্বর্গীয় নিবারণ চন্দ্র হুই, বেলগ্রাম-নিবাসী স্বর্গীয় হরিপদ দত্ত ও রামপুর-নিবাসী স্বর্গীয় জটাবিহারী হুই মহাশয়গণের আন্তরিক সহানুভূতি চিরস্মরণীয় হইয়া আছে।
পরিশেষে, আমি কৃতজ্ঞ হৃদয়ে স্বীকার করিতেছি যে বন্ধুবর শ্রীযুক্ত দ্বিজেন্দ্র চন্দ্র রায় মহাশয় ঘটনাচক্রে প্রকাশকের গুরুভার গ্রহণ না করিলে পুস্তকখানি প্রকাশ করা আমার পক্ষে সহজসাধ্য হইত না; সুতরাং আমার স্বজাতিবর্গ ও আমি তাঁহার নিকট চিরঋণে আবদ্ধ থাকিলাম।
