Life and work

1886–1961 · Freedom fighter and state minister

Jadabendra Nath Panja, also written Jadabendranath Panja, joined the Non-Cooperation Movement in 1920. The Nehru Archive records his imprisonment in 1932–34 and again in 1942, and his later service as West Bengal’s minister for Cottage and Small-scale Industries.[1]

He served as president of the West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee from 1958 to 1961.[1] Dutta traces his earlier life in Burdwan: a law degree from Ripon College in 1911, followed by his departure from legal practice for the freedom movement in 1920.[2]

Dutta explicitly discusses his Ugra Kshatriya family on p. 310 and includes him among community figures in the freedom movement on p. 314.[2]
